Beaver Island Community Center Set for July 1 Grand Opening
Beaver Island, Michigan - May 15, 2008 –

The much-anticipated opening of the Beaver Island Community Center is set for July 1, 2008.  A ribbon cutting ceremony at noon will kick-off a week-long celebration featuring a variety of opportunities for Island residents and visitors to enjoy a sample of what the Community Center will have to offer.  “The Community Center is going to be a place where something is always available, always going on, and our opening week will give our residents and visitors a chance to experience that energy,” according to Ann Partridge, Community Center Director for Island Events and the Performing Arts.

Each day during the week will “Celebrate the Island Community” in a different way and feature its own unique activities.

Tuesday, July 1st will celebrate the official arrival of the new Beaver Island Community Center itself.  Well over a decade in concept to completion, a visual display will take visitors through the story of the fledgling Center, its connection to—and now place in—island history.  “It’s been an incredible journey and a great achievement for us as a community,” said Judy Gallagher, the Preservation Association’s Board President.  “The hard work isn’t over by any means, but now we celebrate!”  Guided tours and complimentary refreshments will be available to visitors throughout the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday, July 2nd is a celebration of Beaver Island’s first community members, the Native Americans.  The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians will be joining the festivities and sharing their unique sense of community and celebration.

The Chenille Sisters will join in for some musical wit, wisdom and outstanding entertainment on Thursday, July 3rd with 2pm and 7:30pm performances.  Tickets are $10 for the matinee, $20 for the evening performance, and can be purchased by calling (231) 448-2022 or from any Preservation Association Board Member.

Friday, July 4th the Community Center joins the entire island in celebrating Independence Day and our Beaver Island Veterans. Just prior to the parade, the Community Center will honor our Veterans with a brief ceremony of thanks.  And just prior to the fireworks, the first movie could premiere in the Community Center’s state-of-the-art auditorium.  While confirmation of the equipment is pending, fingers are crossed for a Friday-the-Fourth Feature!

No celebration of the island as a community could take place without honoring its Irish heritage.  Saturday, July 5th will be a day—and night—filled with everything Irish.  The theatre stage will have constant activity from storytelling to ceidhle lessons, aca pella performances to bobhran demonstrations, topped off with a dance and live performance by Irish (and island-connected) musicians Danny Gillespie, Danny Johnston, Cindy Gillespie, Brian Roman, John McCafferty and Glen Hendrix.

Rounding out the Grand Opening celebration week will be a blessing of the newly inaugurated Community Center by the community’s spiritual leaders at 11:30am on Sunday, July 6th.  Father Pat Cawley of Holy Cross Parish, Father Joe Howell of the Beaver Island Episcopal Church, and Reverend Howard Davis of the Beaver Island Christian Church will unite with anyone wishing to attend to consecrate the new gathering place to its special purpose, mission and the community.

Following the blessing will be an engaging afternoon of lively competition for young and old alike with billiards, euchre, cribbage, and board game tourneys, and (hopefully) the first of many Sunday afternoon movie matinees.

Beaver Island Ice Classic

The Beaver Island Ice Classic contest started today with the placing of the tower on the ice just to the East of the Beaver Island Marina docks. The object of the contest is to guess the day, hour and minute the tower tips over when the ice melts. This is the third year of the contest. Last year the tower went in a 2:52 PM on March 28th and the winner collected over $1,200. In 2006 the tower went in at 8:29 PM on March 29th and the winner collected over $600.

Tickets are available at McDonough’s or from any Preservation Association board member, they are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00. If you live off the island and would like to participate e-mail b_tidmore@hotmail.com (please put Beaver Island in the mail subject heading) for instructions on how to get tickets.

Kathy Speck won with a guess 3 hours and 24 minutes after the tower went down. Second was Tony Connaghan who's time was 4 hours and 4 minutes before it went in. Thanks to all those who participated in this years contest.

(Latest guess was the 16th of May)

Beaver Island Ice Classic
A PABI Winter Fundraiser

In 1917 in a small town called Nenana, Alaska a group bet on when the ice would break up on the Tanana River. Since then they have held an annual contest with increasingly larger prizes.

The Preservation Association decided to begin the Beaver Island Ice Classic in the same vein. The contestants will purchase tickets and enter their guess on when a tower on the ice next to the Beaver Island Marina will goes into the water, with 50% ticket sales going to the winner.

The remainder will be used to fund the Community Center. How does this work? A tower has been placed on the ice next to the Beaver Island Marina. When the tower goes into the water a clock will stop and the time will be recorded.

Those participating will purchase their ticket (s), enter the guess (date, hour, minute). An individual may make as many guesses as they wish for $5.00 per guess or 5 for $20.00. Those matching (or nearest to if none match exactly) will share 50% of the ticket sales. In the case of a tie the 50% will be shared equally among the winners.

Check the website regularly for information on the status and the prize amounts. Tickets are available from PABI Board members and Island stores. Tickets are available from approximately Feb 1 through March 20, 2006.

P.A.B.I. Annual Road Rally
Sunday May 1, 2005

Plans for the PABI annual Road Rally are up and rolling. We are still planning on starting at the Shamrock and ending up at the Beaver Lodge, but will have some unexpected twists and turns along the way. The Road Rally will cost $10 per person and the game will start promptly at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday May 1st. You should arrive a little early to receive all the rules and so you can bid on a ringer to ride in your car and help with the clues. An amended list of the rules are listed below.

  1. You shouldn't have to do anything illegal to finish the Road Rally. (If you do, don't expect us to bail you out!)
  2. All speed limits, stop signs and rights of way need to be followed. Secret Rangers will be on the road to make sure everyone is proceeding in a safe manner. If you are spotted driving recklessly a penalty of 45 minutes will be added to your team.
  3. If you choose to have a cocktail before the Rally, make sure you have a designated driver in your car.
  4. Using external resources is okay. You may call your Aunt Ethel and ask her about the superfluidity of hydrogen or commune with Carl Sagan about astronomy, we don't care.
  5. You can call base for hints, but there will be a penalty. If you think you have the right place but can't find the packet, call base. If you are getting frustrated, call base. If you have the squirmy, itchy feeling, excuse yourself and take care of it privately.
